KIM of the Antarctic

This site is dedicated to the memory of Bob Gove.

History:  Kim is a 40' steel cutter rigged ketch that was built in France in 1977 specifically for an Antarctic adventure.  Her 4 French owners sailed the boat to French Polynesia via the Panama Canal, hauled the boat for a refit in Australia, and then sailed for Antarctica where they iced the boat in for a winter season in 1980.  At that time Kim was the smallest boat to have spent a winter season there.

Reconstruction:  The boat was purchased in 2001 and was trucked from Saginaw, MI to Blue Springs, MO.

Historical Photos:  From 2 books that came with the boat documenting the Antarctic trip.

Reconstruction Photos:  Starting with the previous owner in Saginaw.

Today is May 6, 2007.  KIM will be loaded on a truck next Tuesday for a trip to Maine for the refit completion.  Look for new photos and details of the work to be done in Maine from Chip the shipwright.  This is an exciting time for this historic sailboat!  / KIM arrived in Maine last weekend (May 12th) and is in Chip's work shed.
